Capitán Suizo Beachfront Boutique Hotel#2Best overall

Capitán Suizo Beachfront Boutique Hotel

Beachfront · south TamarindoPrice: $$$Guest score: 9.8/10
  • Beachfront
  • Free-form pool
  • Spa
  • Breakfast buffet
  • Bungalows

The classic Tamarindo boutique hotel: right on the sand, wrapped in tropical garden. Capitán Suizo sits directly on the quieter south end of Tamarindo Beach, about 1 km from the busy center and a 12-minute beach walk from Playa Langosta. Around 35 rooms, bungalows and suites are spread through a mature garden around a free-form pool, so it feels far more private than its location suggests. The beachfront El Barco restaurant, the Aromas del Mar spa and a breakfast buffet round it out.

Why stay

  • On the calmest stretch of Tamarindo Beach
  • Garden setting feels secluded
  • Guest scores near the top of town

Keep in mind

  • Premium pricing
  • Rooms have fridges, not kitchens
Best for: Couples and families who want a quiet, beachfront base within walking distance of town.
The Coast Beachfront Hotel#3Best beachfront with a kitchen

The Coast Beachfront Hotel

Beachfront · south TamarindoPrice: $$–$$$Guest score: 9.4–9.6/10
  • Beachfront
  • Kitchens
  • Pool
  • Villa with private pool

Modern suites on the sand, each with its own kitchen. The Coast is a small, modern hotel on the south end of Tamarindo Beach, about 100 m from Capitán Suizo. Suites and junior suites come with kitchens, and there is a two-bedroom ocean-view villa with a private pool. There is a pool but no full restaurant on site, which most guests don’t mind: Tamarindo’s restaurants are a short walk away and you can cook your own breakfast.

Why stay

  • Direct beach access
  • Kitchen in every suite
  • Excellent guest scores

Keep in mind

  • No full-service restaurant
  • Small property, books up early in dry season
Best for: Couples and small families who want to be on the sand and still cook their own meals.
Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas#4Best luxury villas

Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas

Playa LangostaPrice: $$$–$$$$
  • Private-pool villas
  • Full kitchens
  • Spa
  • Kids’ pool
  • Langosta

Villas with private pools in a lush, quiet corner of Langosta. A Preferred Hotels & Resorts member in Playa Langosta, Cala Luna mixes bungalow-style rooms with two- and three-bedroom villas that have full kitchens and private pools (up to 7 guests). There is an adults’ pool and a kids’ pool, the farm-to-table Origen restaurant and the open-air Reconnect Spa. It is a short walk to the beach rather than on it, and the nearest stretch is rocky at low tide.

Why stay

  • Villas give families real space and privacy
  • Very quiet setting
  • Spa and restaurant on site

Keep in mind

  • Not directly on the sand
  • Among the priciest stays in the area
Best for: Families or friend groups who want hotel service with villa space, and couples after a quiet splurge.
Tamarindo Diria Beach Resort#5Best full-service family resort

Tamarindo Diria Beach Resort

Beachfront · center of townPrice: $$
  • Beachfront
  • Multiple pools
  • Swim-up bar
  • Adults-only pool
  • Several restaurants

The big, family-owned resort in the middle of everything. Family-owned for more than 30 years, the Diria is Tamarindo’s largest beachfront resort, with 240+ rooms right in the center of town. Expect several pools — a beachfront pool, a large pool with swim-up bar, and an adults-only “Quiet Pool” in the Tropicana section — plus multiple restaurants including Brisa Mar and Nari’s brick-oven pizza. Some rooms sit across the main road, so choose your room category carefully.

Why stay

  • Walk to every restaurant and surf school in town
  • Plenty for kids and adults to do on site
  • Mid-range pricing for a beachfront resort

Keep in mind

  • Busy and can be noisy in the center
  • Some rooms are across the street from the beach
Best for: Families who want a full resort with the town on the doorstep.
Wyndham Tamarindo#6Best views

Wyndham Tamarindo

Hillside above Tamarindo BayPrice: $$Guest score: 8.4/10
  • Infinity pool
  • Ocean views
  • Pool bar
  • Beach-club shuttle

A hilltop infinity pool with the whole bay below you. Built in 2015 on the hill above town, the 104-room Wyndham trades beach access for big views: its infinity pool and pool bar look straight out over Tamarindo Bay and the sunset. The Nauta restaurant is on site. The beach is not walkable for most people — the hotel runs a paid, reservation-only shuttle to a beach club in Langosta — so it suits travelers who don’t mind a short ride.

Why stay

  • Best sunset views of any hotel in town
  • Modern rooms and a quieter setting
  • Big-brand reliability

Keep in mind

  • Not walkable to the beach
  • Shuttle costs extra and needs booking
Best for: Couples who prioritize views and calm over stepping straight onto the sand.
Hotel La Palapa#7Best small hotel on the beach in town

Hotel La Palapa

Beachfront · center of townPrice: $$Guest score: 9.2/10
  • Beachfront
  • Beach bar & restaurant
  • Only 7 rooms
  • Balconies

Seven rooms, a beach bar and your toes in the sand. Just north of the main roundabout, La Palapa is a tiny seven-room hotel sitting right on Tamarindo Beach in the center of town. Every room has a balcony or patio, some with sea views, and the beachfront restaurant and bar serves breakfast through dinner. It is simple and social rather than resort-style — perfect if you plan to spend your days in the water and your evenings in town.

Why stay

  • About a minute to the sand
  • Walk to everything in town
  • Strong guest scores

Keep in mind

  • Center of town means some evening noise
  • Few rooms and limited amenities
Best for: Couples and surfers who want to live on the beach in the middle of the action.
Tamarindo Bay Boutique Hotel (Adults Only)#8Best adults-only value

Tamarindo Bay Boutique Hotel (Adults Only)

Tamarindo townPrice: $
  • Adults only (18+)
  • Two pools
  • Self check-in
  • Gym

A calm, 15-room adults-only hideaway with two pools. This small adults-only hotel (18+) has 15 rooms over two floors around two pools and a garden, plus a gym. Check-in is self-service, which keeps prices down and the vibe low-key. There is no restaurant, but you are in town, so dining is a short walk. Note that the hotel takes cards only (Visa/Mastercard).

Why stay

  • Quiet, no-kids atmosphere
  • Good value for Tamarindo
  • Walkable to town

Keep in mind

  • No restaurant or front desk staff on site
  • Not beachfront
Best for: Couples on a budget who want peace and quiet.
MARAVIDA Boutique Hotel & Resort#9Best budget pick with a view

MARAVIDA Boutique Hotel & Resort

Hill at the entrance to townPrice: $Guest score: 7.8–8.0/10
  • Ocean-view pool
  • Bar
  • Gym
  • Breakfast included

The former Tamarindo Vista Villas, with a hilltop pool and a 5-minute walk to the beach. Formerly the Best Western Tamarindo Vista Villas, MARAVIDA sits on the hill at the entrance to town, roughly 800 m (about a 5-minute walk downhill) from the beach. The hilltop pool has ocean views, there is a bar and gym, and listings include free breakfast. It is a value choice: solid location and views without beachfront prices.

Why stay

  • Low prices for the location
  • Pool with a view
  • Easy walk into town

Keep in mind

  • Uphill walk back from the beach
  • Older property; reviews are good rather than great
Best for: Value seekers who will spend most of their time out exploring.
Best Western Camino a Tamarindo#10Best for road-trippers

Best Western Camino a Tamarindo

On the road into Tamarindo (~9.5 km out)Price: $
  • Pool
  • Restaurant & bar
  • Free parking

A simple, affordable stop if you have a rental car. This 30-room hotel is on the highway into Tamarindo, about 9.5 km (roughly 15 minutes’ drive) from the beach — the Costa Rica tourism board now lists it as Seis Playas Hotel. You get a pool, a restaurant and bar, and much lower prices than in town. Only consider it if you have a car; it is not walkable to anything.

Why stay

  • Among the lowest prices near Tamarindo
  • Easy highway access for day trips

Keep in mind

  • About 15 minutes’ drive from the beach
  • You need a car
Best for: Budget road-trippers using Tamarindo as one stop of many.

How to choose where to stay in Tamarindo

Tamarindo is small, but where you sleep changes your trip. Central Tamarindo puts restaurants, bars and surf schools on your doorstep but can be noisy at night. The south end of Tamarindo Beach (Capitán Suizo, The Coast) is calmer and still walkable. Playa Langosta, across a small river mouth to the south, is the quiet residential option, and the hills trade beach access for views and lower prices.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best hotel in Tamarindo?
For most travelers, Capitán Suizo is the best all-round choice: it is right on the quiet south end of Tamarindo Beach, has a lovely garden and pool, and earns some of the highest guest scores in town. If you want to cook your own meals on the beach, The Coast Beachfront Hotel is the pick.
Which Tamarindo hotels are right on the beach?
Capitán Suizo, The Coast, Tamarindo Diria and Hotel La Palapa are all beachfront. The Wyndham is up on the hill (shuttle to a beach club), and MARAVIDA is about a 5-minute walk from the sand.
Where should families stay in Tamarindo?
Families who want a resort with several pools and restaurants should look at the Tamarindo Diria. Families or groups who would rather have bedrooms, a kitchen and space usually do better with a villa (Cala Luna) or a vacation rental like our Langosta Beach Penthouse.
Is there an adults-only hotel in Tamarindo?
Yes — Tamarindo Bay Boutique Hotel is adults-only (18+). The Tamarindo Diria also has an adults-only pool area in its Tropicana section.
Is Tamarindo or Playa Langosta better?
Tamarindo town is lively, walkable and full of restaurants and surf schools. Playa Langosta, just south, is quieter and more residential, with a calmer beach — and it is still only a 10–15 minute walk to town.
How far is Tamarindo from Liberia airport?
About 67 km (42 miles), or roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by road from Liberia International Airport (LIR).
